Even if you face lonely periods in your life

Even if you experience lonely time periods when you feel you have no power within, you should not get discouraged. You should know through such periods you could overcome the valleys of your life. A border in the valley is the midpoint of the valley. The larger the valley, the wider is the bottom of the valley. You will experience a lonely time when you alone pass through the expanse of the bottom of the large valley. When you are there, neither God nor Satan can interfere with you. You must pass through it all by yourself. Like a boat has to navigate through sunken rocks in dark night, you must face such a dangerous time. You want to gut it out, but you have no power left in you. Then you will be overcome with the feeling that God has forsaken you. You are so bewildered that you cannot tell if God really even exists.

The question is how can you overcome such a time? You must remind yourself of a past time when you were filled with joy because of the grace and blessings you received from God, as if you were a bee that was intoxicated with nectar. You need to have such experiences. God, who protected me in the past when I faced difficulty is my loving Parent. I am without a doubt God’s child. No matter how curved and contorted the road your travel takes you, in the end God will put you in the position to fulfil the purpose of His love. This is absolutely true, no matter what.

A reason why God lets you go through this process is that He wants you to realize something very important and very significant. For that reason, God gives you this kind of time period. It is not that God is blocking the way so that you must face this lonely period. If you face a period of loneliness, you must overcome the period with faith that is rooted in the conviction that God loves you from your personal standard – that God has been protecting you and encouraging you. In spite of what people may say, you must overcome such a lonely period. You cannot depend on anyone. You must not be discouraged even if you fall into the position where no one recognizes you.

When you are lonely, you must realize that God too must be agonizing, since He has to place you, His loving child, in such a position of loneliness. Do you agree with this? God is in the same position as parents who anguish over their child as they helplessly see their child suffering. Realizing this, as you go through this lonely period, God will be filled with a great desire to love you even more. However, He cannot give you love because it is a time you have to go through alone.

So, you should know as soon as you go through the lonely course, God’s love will reach to you. So, you must go through the period with this faith. You should know once you overcome that, you will definitely receive great blessings. After you experience this several times, you will never doubt God’s Will nor wonder about your destiny even though you are over and over going through a lonely course, or being placed in a lonely position. In this way, you will learn the process for going through a lonely period.

Quote

“God created all things in Heaven and on Earth with one heart, one body and one thought. For whom did God create all things in Heaven and on Earth? Because God made the creation for human beings, the conclusion of the whole history is to be masters of the Earth who can have the heart of God and bear fruit in having the duty of the holy son in front of Heaven and Earth as a filial son, patriot and saint.” – Reverend Sun Myung Moon

How can we say that God exists?

How can we answer the question of whether there is really a God? Energy tends to dissipate when it is not used, and activity always slows down when energy decreases. The energy output of any system must always be smaller than the energy input. You don’t spend more than you earn, and the same is true of energy. Then how do we develop and become prosperous? It doesn’t make sense to say that simply because the world exists it is automatically bound to become more prosperous; things cannot happen in random fashion. People cannot logically explain why this should be, and in an attempt to understand the universe they come up with the very convenient explanation, “Nature takes care of it through energy.” But what is nature itself? The energy in nature cannot be produced unless there is some interaction of two entities. When you just stand still there is no energy being produced or used, but as soon as you have an object or partner with whom to interact you can move anywhere. Even though you have energy, unless you interact with others that energy doesn’t serve any purpose.

If interaction is to take place, two entities are necessary, subject and object, and before we talk about energy we must confirm their existence. Where do subject and object come from? To answer this we may ask: When do you know you have love? When you are standing all by yourself can you say you have love? Love manifests when you have an object or a subject, a partner. When you exercise your energy through the power of give and take, you can recognize the existence and action of love. To get energy we need action, and to have action we need a subject and object. Thus, we cannot say that energy itself is the beginning or the source, because in order to get energy the interaction of subject and object is necessary. It is through the process of subject and object having give and take that you have energy to sustain your existence.

Is it true that everything in the universe resembles a circle? Matter in its smallest form exists in circular motion, as do the enormous heavenly bodies. Energy is derived through interaction which creates circular motion because that is the only motion which results in unending give and take. The various parts of our bodies are rounded. There appear to be many sharp points and angular parts of a tree, but if you look closely you will see that the overall shape is round, from the leaves to the trunk.

Is there a limit to your growth, or do you just grow unceasingly? Your internal mechanisms are designed in such a way that they grow to a certain point and then stop. If each organism is programmed to stop growing at a certain point, then how can larger or higher-level entities be made from lower life forms? This can only result from there being more and different kinds of interaction, a chain-reaction of give and take, so to speak, which can produce greater and greater productive energy. Through the interaction of a subject taking on object and then together becoming a higher subject which can take another object, energy can increase and become increasingly fruitful. From this point of view the theory of random evolution is certainly nonsense.

Once again we come to the question: How do we know there is a God? God is none other than a gigantic super-plus or super-subject, while you and I are a tiny plus and minus which together form one small minus. What is a minus and what is a plus? The body is minus and the soul or spirit is plus; together they make up one individual, which is a small minus. There are always plus and minus relationships in the life of our body and spirit. For example the body will say, “Spirit, don’t worry about God or spirit world. Just enjoy things while you are here on Earth. You will live a hundred years.” That’s what we call earthly life. On the other hand, plus is saying, “No, Body listen to me. There is a giant super-plus out there and we must unite with Him. That is what makes us free and eternal. Everyone lives through the struggles of the plus and minus as they strive for unity.

Within ourselves is a certain entity which recognizes the existence of the super-plus and which makes a constant effort to join together with it. This is why physical satisfactions cannot bring a person total fulfilment; even when one’s stomach is full, there is still some drive within him to be completely free and satisfied by searching after and finding some higher subject. Human beings all act in this fashion, even when they have abundant pleasure in seeing beautiful things, hearing beautiful sounds or having a full stomach. All of you have everything your bodies need, but you still search after some other kind of satisfaction.

Does that particular desire come from you or from somewhere else? Even though your parents gave you life, your real aspiration is to strive toward that ultimate individual, that ultimate super-plus. Should you always stay with your parents just because they raised you? No, because you were born with a distinct character of your own. As a result, each individual looks at the same goal but from a completely different angle, and therefore, the same topic looks different to each person.

You need an object because no matter how great you are, the most distance you can cover alone is 180 degrees; no man or woman alone can be 360 degrees perfect. The power of love causes two people to interact and allows them to unite. The power of love is the power which makes the two interact. Would you prefer love that is made of straight lines or contours of peaks and valleys? Love should go straight forward so that it can create a 90 degree angle between two people. When this angle is misshapen, the circular interaction between the two elements will not become completely round, but oval instead.

Would you want love to be permanent or temporal? Only permanent love resembles the love of God; permanence, absolute purity and absolute beauty are all elements which correspond to the elements of God. Because such a basic origin of beauty, love, perfection and purity exists in the universe, we feel constantly drawn to that source and have an innate desire to be like Him and instinctively we make efforts to be like Him. Because the object is the mirror of the subject, all objects connected somehow to that subject are trying to pursue the same goal. God, also, cannot exist all by Himself. He needs us, therefore, and has to reach out.

Why do your eyes constantly move and turn from side to side? Why can’t they stay still? Will you answer, “My eyes are moving, because my parents said they should”? Since your parents or ancestors have nothing to do with the operation of your body, who could have ordered your eyes to move? Nature? Did a monkey tell your eyes to move? How do you know whether God ordered it? You haven’t seen Him, but there must be someone, some giant thinker somewhere in the past who decided that the human eye should move. Those who believe in evolution, however, say that the eye and all its processes just developed by chance over the eons.

An even more mysterious occurrence is the presence of moisture around the eye. Something inside your eye always provides a little bit of moisture all day long so that your eyeball doesn’t dry out. If you ask that moisture why it is there maybe it will answer, “Because I found it very comfortable here.” Perhaps some time ago the eye petitioned some force, explaining, “I need a little bit of moisture, and if I don’t get it I’ll go on strike.” In reality, the eyeball doesn’t realize who made it move or who gave it moisture.

Everyone has eyelashes, but wouldn’t the eyes be much neater without them? Sometimes eyelashes are bothersome, especially when one gets stuck in your eye. Why should everyone’s eyes have moisture and eyelashes? They seem to be awkward and unnecessary but someone put them there and there must be some will or purpose for them. Someone wanted to put hair on the human face, but why not on top of the nose? Why do there have to be lashes around the eye rather than on top of the nose? Awhile back some communists were discussing Divine Principle and they were asked why the universe functions as it does and why certain patterns are universal. They replied that it is all due to nature. We know that that answer provides no logical explanation and nature certainly does not function illogically.

We know that moisture, lashes and eye movements are necessary to the eye, and without them it cannot function properly. Do you think your eye could function all day long without blinking? Even without your thinking about it, you blink your eyes to keep them clean and moist. When you are working hard and perspiring on some hot day, if you didn’t have eyebrows then all the perspiration would end up in your eyes.

Just by analysing one small eye in this way, you can find tremendous mystery. In some unknown time the eye was designed with the understanding that most animals would need visionary The sun provides light so we can see around us, but without light there is no need to have eyes. Because heat and air evaporate moisture, some super-mind thought about how to prevent the eye from being damaged by dryness. Finally, that mind knew that the air collects dust and that there should be some protection against it for the eye. These functions were all prerequisites to the design of the eye. Did the eye know all of this itself? Do you think this knowledge was there before the creation of the eye, or did it come into existence after the creation of the eye?

First a man must shed tears for man, and then he must discover the realm of God’s tears

Where can man truly find happiness then? The ultimate happiness comes when he can conquer not only the tears of man but of God as well. We must restore the world to the realm where God no longer needs to shed tears. The history of tears began because of the fall of man. When we conquer the realm of man’s degradation then we can certainly find the realm where God and man no longer need to shed tears. This is precisely the point we are approaching today. It is our destiny as men to go over the two hills of tears. We must cross over these two hills in order to be totally happy. Those who are trying to pursue the road of truth must shed tears over the misery of humanity and taste the suffering of man. A thinking man could only be grieved by the problems of man’ the suffering and dying of men and all the misery that permeates our society.

Many young people think about what the real purpose of life is and they agonize over how and where they should direct their young energy. That is the beginning of the road along which you will conquer tears. Those people who never even think about those things-the meaning and purpose of life and death-do not even belong to the species of man. Thinking people wonder about their own lives and also about the society’ nation and world and they grapple with the problem of bringing a solution to those who are suffering and in misery. Man has to think in that direction.

Grief over the suffering and sorrow of man alone will not bring any lasting solution. Man has to go further, down to the bottom and origin of tears. We have to go beyond human tears and realize the tears of God. Tears that are shed for one’s own sake or the sake of one’s nation, for the human level alone, cannot ultimately contribute to the over-all solution of bringing back the ideal world here on earth. No matter what, all of that is still within the realm of selfishness, being merely the continuation of the tears that were shed by Adam and Eve for themselves.

Everyone must discover the new realm of tears that God has shed and deeply experience the taste of those tears; otherwise we will never solve human problems. This means learning how to shed tears beyond self-centred suffering and misery. First we must discover God and discover God’s tears and become people who shed tears to alleviate the suffering of God.

I want you to know that those people in history known as saints and holy men were people who learned about the tears of God. By centring upon the grief and sorrow of God they have been looking at mankind from God’s point of view and shedding the same kind of tears that God shed. That is a religious way of life and by shedding the same kind of tears that God shed you become a co-worker of God’s. What kind of religion stands as a co-worker on the side of God? The religion that not only teaches man to shed tears for humanity but to shed tears for God will undoubtedly receive God’s blessing and become the central religion of humanity. There is absolutely no question about it.

The chief question is for whom you weep. If a village realizes that a person is crying for the sake of the village then the entire village has to bow down to him. That act is noble because it is not for the person’s sake but for the sake of the village. If there is someone who sheds tears for the sake of the nation then the entire nation is benefited and the citizens should bow down and respect that person.

The son of filial piety is one who shed tears not for himself, but for the sake of his parents. Without exception the loyal subject is the one who sheds tears for his own king and queen. Patriots are those who shed tears for the sake of their own country and countrymen. A saint or holy man is a different kind of person altogether. The patriot is concerned for the nation but a saint directs all his energy and tears for the sake of God and all of humanity. Under that condition alone can we say that a person has lived a saintly life.

Looking at the great saints in history, is there one who truly shed tears in order to bring God and humanity together, even at the moment of his death? Certainly we find one in the person of Jesus Christ. At the moment of his own death on the cross he was worrying about his own adversaries, the Roman soldiers who pierced him with their spears. He shed his tears and sweat for the sake of his own enemies. Because Jesus cried for his worst adversary he was actually crying for the sake of all types of people. By shedding his tears for the sake of his worst enemy Jesus not only won the hearts of all good men, but will also win the respect of the worst kind of sinful man in history.

Jesus considered his own well-being last of all, praying at the end that God accept his soul, for he had done his very best. Jesus directed his whole life toward shouldering all of God’s suffering here on earth and as his life ended on the cross he could say that he had done it. You can see how different were the selfish tears of Adam and Eve and the unselfish tears Jesus shed. Both were falling down to their deaths as they shed tears, Adam and Eve being the victims of their sin, and Jesus being crucified on the cross. As they approached their spiritual death Adam and Eve shed tears for themselves but Jesus shed tears for the sake of humanity and for God and for his own enemies.

Our hope hinges upon our children

Why do you love your children? A husband and wife may confront each other in heated battle, with neither side budging an inch, but the one point of unity always remaining between them is their children. Thus there is never complete separation. Why is that? Why don’t they hate their children when they fight with each other? If they were to disregard their children, then they would have nothing left because their children are their hope. They must have something to hang onto, and their children are that something. The hope of the father, the mother, and also of God all hinges upon the children, and they cannot disregard their hope.

Even though they may not consciously realize this, they can feel that their children are the beginning point of hope for the Kingdom of God here on earth and in heaven. History begins right there. Therefore, God, parents and children, all find common ground in the position of the children.

Parents can always forget themselves when they centre on their children and their sacrificial spirit will extend even to the point of giving up their own lives. If a husband and wife are a happy couple and very much united in love but they have no children, can they say they are perfectly happy as a family? Even though a husband and wife may be perfectly in harmony, as long as there are no children some area of their lives will always remain imperfect. That is because they will not have the hope that will create their Kingdom of God on earth and hereafter in heaven. They will not have planted the seed of the Kingdom.

If a husband and wife go to spirit world without the experience of having children, then when they see God loving all His children here on earth they cannot share His feeling. Without having children they are lacking in one area and their feelings cannot parallel God’s in His own experience of having children. For eternity they will be completely lacking in that one vertical area, and they will have no way to gain that experience.

Then what is your conclusion? Do you need to be married and have children? There are many very egoistic, secular, and selfish feelings prevailing in our world nowadays. People are thinking that marriage is a burden, and that they do not want to be bothered with children. Even many Americans who did marry are making a conscientious effort to not have children. Why? They are afraid that they will be imprisoned by having the responsibility of a child. America is a women’s kingdom; here the women are always masters of the house, and in many cases the men obey the women. Many times a couple does not have children because the wife just does not want that pain and burden.

I frequently go to New York, and there I have seen that most of the well-dressed people are women, while the American men look miserable. The women not only wear beautiful clothes but their ten fingers are not enough to hold all their ornaments. The amazing thing is, however, that those women do not look happy, even though they have everything and are kicking their husbands around. Many of those women push their husbands to get them bigger diamonds and more gold. Do you agree? Only the men are saying yes! Can you women say, “I don’t need earrings or diamond rings. What I need is perfect harmony with my husband and a sacrificial spirit towards him so that together we can serve the purpose of God.” That is beautiful, isn’t it? Would you still say, “Amen,” if you had only bad shoes and rags to wear?

Your external looks and ornaments have no value in a spiritual sense; rather the kind of love that is dwelling in your heart is the key. A child is love made visible and the quality of your love can be seen in your child. When there is common fruit between a husband and wife then there can be no permanent separation between them. Their children are their most precious things, and for an innocent child his mother and father are most precious. In order to make a child happy, you must provide him or her with the love of a father and mother. Even more than that, the parents must give their children the love of God; they must represent God, and His love must be made visible through them.

God cannot forgive anyone who acts to destroy such a beautiful bond of love. The most pitiful situation, and one we can often see in American society, is that of a husband and wife getting divorced and fighting over their children. No matter how much that couple may try to invite God to come, there is no room for the love of God in that kind of situation. In divorce the parents are not only separating from each other but from their children and from God. Their vertical line of love is destroyed. The mother may say to her child, “Your daddy is absolutely no good. Please hate him.” That does not make sense because a child cannot hate his father; it is also virtually impossible for a child to hate his mother. Those of you whose own parents have separated, raise your hands. You know from experience that the most agonizing pain for a child is witnessing conflict between his father and mother, because then you do not know which way to turn. Can you love only one parent and disregard the other?

Actually a child becomes more sympathetic toward his father when his mother says he must hate his father. It is natural to oppose separation, and so it is natural for a child to protest the separation of his parents. In the most fundamental meaning, love is not for yourself but for others. That is the basic element of love, and anyone who would live this principle will always oppose the action of separation.

Can you imagine God coming down to a child and saying, “You must not love your parents. You obey Me; I am your God. You must hate your parents.” Could that child obey such a mandate? Even to God that child will say, “What kind of God are You?” If God ever asked a child to hate his own parents then it would have to be for a selfish reason, such as trying to win the child’s love for Himself by having him reject his own parents. But the entire universe revolts against any selfish motive.

How would the child feel if God said, “Your parents may not treat you right. I know your heart, but after all they are your parents. You must respect them; as much as I still love them, you must love them too. You must stay with Me.” If that child has really clear logic, he will say, “God is really God, a God of mercy, unselfishness, and sacrifice.”

A child is the visible fruit of love and that child will serve as the common ground of unity between husband and wife; because of that child, then, there is no way that they could remain eternally separated. We are to live our lives here on earth and pass into spirit world. There the perfect kingdom of heart has four parts, where the love of God, the love of father, mother, and child all together create a warm, harmonious feeling. The person who lives his physical life being separated from people and acting destructively will also be elevated to the spirit world. Do you think such a person can feel comfortable in a heavenly atmosphere? Is there any place for that kind of person to sit down in the spiritual kingdom if he has been living for the destruction of love here on earth?

You must become universal

All your surroundings belong to the universe. Unless you make yourself a universal being and become tied to the universal cause, God, you must realize that all nature around you will not want to be possessed by you or be of service to you. You must become their subject first by making yourself a universal being who is connected to the original cause. Then you are in a position to care for, love, and enjoy the universe. If you make yourself a universal being, connected to the fundamental origin of the universe, then the sun-rays will want to come and warm your body. Water will want to get into your mouth and air will want to go into your lungs.

When nature is willing to serve you, that air, water and sunshine are far better than any tonic or medicine. The person who deserves the honour of the service of all nature will not catch colds or be seriously ill; he will be healthy for his entire life. Would you like to be someone recognized by the world as a worldwide person? What if you are clumsy, tall and very ugly? Even then you still have the right to become a person respected worldwide by making yourself into a universal man and by connecting yourself to the original subject of the universe.

Let us say that among several friends you have one who is always giving you a hard time, continuously nagging you to pay more attention to him. When you look at that person his face is ugly, always trying to snap at you, complaining that you do not pay enough attention to him. Such a person would come to you and then turn around and kick you. Would you want to be around him?

Compare that kind of relationship to your relationship with the universe. There are two kinds of people. Some continuously nag, “Why didn’t the sun come out today? Why is the world so dirty? Why couldn’t God make me happier?” Such people have only complaints toward God and nature. Will nature like them? Nature will turn around and kick them instead. Such people may try to make themselves happy by going to the health spa and exercising, but everywhere they go they will be surrounded by enemies; the air will shove them, the water slap them, and the sunshine bum them. That kind of person will never be healthy.

The entire natural world has but one universal mind, and as a result the relationship between you and nature should be thought of as the relationship between you and your neighbour. What makes your friend happy or unhappy? Your answer directly applies to your relationship with nature.

Why did our ancestors not leave us a clean, pure heritage? Why did they leave us an evil history? The answer can only be that they did not obey the universal law of service, that they violated the divine law of the universe, desiring to make everything serve them: “The world is mine and must come to serve me.” That basic attitude is the worst violation of universal law.

In order to become lords of creation we must possess universal character and comply with universal law, meaning that we must become unselfish people, existing solely for service to others. We all want to become recognized as a centre of the world, recognized by the universe. In order to do that we ourselves must recognize the value of the universe; we must live in the concept that we are here solely to serve the world. Unless you have that personality you certainly cannot become a central person of the world or the universe.

God is the centre of the universe, the spirit world and physical world together, because He is perfect and exists solely for the sake of others. By living in that way God is making Himself the centre of the universe. I am sure you understand.

We come to the one absolute criterion: Those who serve themselves, trying to take everything for their own benefit, will produce only evil results. Those who willingly and lovingly give for the benefit of others will bring wholesome results, and add benefit to the side of good. What kind of persons were your ancestors? By only thinking about themselves and their own families, they did not expand their personality to the national or worldwide levels.

No matter what you have previously learned, regardless of how good or well-spoken a person may appear, if he seeks to use everything for his own benefit he is evil. The person who thinks of the difference between his own children and other children is not a universal person; if his children are universal beings then all other children are also universal beings. His wife is precious because she is a universal being; therefore all other women are also important and precious. In this respect we have not liberated the selfishness of our egos. That godly way of life has not been clear.

Love nature and love people

You should know how to love nature and love people. You should know that those who cannot love people or love nature cannot love God. Because all things of creation are symbols for God and because people are substantial beings, those who know how to love all things of creation and people will come to love God.

You should always love nature. You should love nature and love people. You should love people of all five colours in the human race. Would God say, “Oh, I like only white people”? Then everyone would have to wear only white clothes. All white people would have to wear only white clothes, and throw away all their coloured clothes. Why would you wear black clothes or coloured clothes? That would be a contradiction.

Even all the elements and the smallest creatures go toward the way of love. They are moving toward being the cells of humankind that can directly contact the love that is one with God. For this reason, we should sacrifice ourselves for the sake of love. We should invest ourselves.

Since there is a tradition of pouring out one’s life and possessions in their entirety, lower entities seek to give their whole being for the sake of higher entities. This is not Darwin’s Theory of Evolution but a theory of absorption based on love. The question is how the value of one of the smallest creatures increases as it becomes material to be used in creating the next higher level of value.

We should feel that all creatures of God are objects of our love. We should be people who can love, and be loved by, even the smallest forms of life, not to mention human beings, as well as everything visible and invisible in heaven. When a bird calls, “Chirp, chirp, chirp” in the morning, instead of saying, “You pesky sparrow, I am trying to sleep late. Why are you chirping?!” say, “Oh, thank you. You came to wake me up. Ha ha, you are telling me that an important guest is coming to see me.” The outlook is different. This is a great thing.

Centered on such people, a myriad of angels in heaven form a subject realm of harmony where they can have give and take with people, as butterflies and bees do with flowers. When that happens, a flowery garden of harmony will surely appear in which God rejoices, people rejoice, angels rejoice and all things are immersed in love. A spring party will then begin.

God created the angelic world at the same time that He created the human world. What kind of world is the angelic world? Only when human beings appear with beauty and fragrance – like blossoms that exist for the sake of bearing one fruit – will the nest of love finally be prepared. Hence, all life starts from there, and all beings that have life can harmonize starting from there. Human beings make this harmony possible.
